From Autumn to Christmas: How to Transition Your Home for the Festive Season

As the days grow shorter and autumn slowly gives way to the festive season, October is the perfect time to start making small changes around the home. There’s no need to bring out all the Christmas decorations just yet. Instead, build on the warm colours, cosy textures and soft lighting of autumn to create a home that can naturally transition into Christmas.

From rich recycled glass and candlelight to seasonal tableware and subtle festive details, here are some simple ways to take your home from autumn into Christmas.

Build on Your Autumn Colour Palette

One of the easiest ways to transition your home between seasons is through colour.

Warm autumn shades such as amber, olive and mulberry create a beautiful base that doesn’t need to disappear when Christmas arrives. Instead, introduce deeper festive shades alongside them as the season progresses.

Amber recycled glass looks particularly beautiful in the softer light of autumn, while olive and mulberry add depth and warmth. As Christmas approaches, touches of rich red and emerald green can be introduced through decorations and candle holders such as our 20cm recycled glass candle sticks.

The result is a layered, seasonal look that feels festive without an overnight transformation.

Create a Cosy Glow

Lighting becomes increasingly important as we move into the darker months. With evenings drawing in earlier each day, adding different sources of warm light can instantly make a room feel more inviting.

Table lamps are an easy way to create pockets of soft light around a room, particularly on side tables, consoles and shelves. Pairing lamp bases with velvet lampshades adds another layer of texture and warmth that's perfect for autumn and winter. Alternatively introduce some warm neutrals such as our handmade jute shade - perfect for adding a warm, earthy touch which captures the beauty of nature at this time of year.

Start Thinking About the Christmas Table

You don't need to wait until December to start creating a more seasonal table.

Begin with pieces you'll use throughout autumn and winter, such as white ceramics, recycled glassware and coloured candle holders. A neutral ceramic such as our coral white ceramic collection base makes it particularly easy to change the look of your table simply by switching accessories.

During autumn, pair white tableware with amber or olive glass and natural linens. Closer to Christmas, introduce red and emerald candle holders, greenery and a few festive decorations.

It's an easy way to create a Christmas tablescape without investing in tableware that only works for a few days of the year.

Find New Ways to Use Christmas Decorations

Christmas decorations don't have to be reserved for the tree.

One of our favourite ways to introduce festive details around the home is to use recycled glass Christmas decorations in unexpected places.

Try placing one of our Recycled Glass Tree Baubles at each setting on your Christmas table to create a simple name card holder or place setting. They can also be displayed in bowls, hung from cupboard handles or incorporated into seasonal arrangements.

Introducing just a few decorations during late autumn is a subtle way to begin the transition towards Christmas before putting up the tree.

Layer in Natural Textures

While colour often gets most of the attention when decorating for autumn and Christmas, texture can make just as much difference.

Baskets, natural fabrics, wood and soft velvet all help create the relaxed, layered feeling we associate with this time of year.

Rather than replacing your existing autumn accessories, build on them. A basket filled with blankets can stay exactly where it is, while a velvet lampshade continues to add warmth well into winter. Simply introduce more festive pieces around them as December approaches.

This approach creates a home that feels naturally seasonal rather than completely redecorated.

Let Autumn Slowly Become Christmas

The transition from autumn to Christmas doesn't need to happen all at once.

Start with the colours and textures you already love for autumn — warm glass, candlelight, ceramics and natural materials — and gradually introduce festive shades and decorations as the weeks go by.

By building on your existing autumn décor rather than replacing it, you can create a home that feels warm, welcoming and beautifully seasonal from October right through to Christmas.
